Plain-language definition
The payment due date is the deadline shown on a credit card statement for the required payment. Issuer instructions explain how and when a payment must be received or credited.
Why it matters
Missing the required payment deadline can have account consequences. The due date should be read together with the minimum payment, past-due amount, statement balance, and applicable grace-period terms.
Example
A statement closes on August 5 and lists August 30 as the due date. Activity posted on August 8 can change the current balance without changing the already-issued statement deadline.
What to check on your statement
Use the term as a starting point, then locate the matching label, balance category, date, fee, or rate on the current statement and cardmember agreement.
Common confusion
- The due date is not the same as the statement closing date.
- The due date should not be assumed to be every issuer's credit-reporting date.
