Plain-language definition

The statement balance is the account balance shown for a completed billing cycle. It appears with the statement's minimum payment, due date, rates, fees, and other disclosures for that cycle.

Why it matters

The statement balance helps a cardholder understand the completed cycle and payment obligation. It should not be silently replaced with a later current balance when reviewing that statement.

Example

A statement closes at $800. A $120 purchase posts three days later. The completed statement still shows $800, while the current balance can show $920 before considering payments or credits.

What to check on your statement

Use the term as a starting point, then locate the matching label, balance category, date, fee, or rate on the current statement and cardmember agreement.
