Plain-language definition
Credit utilization is a ratio between a reported revolving balance and the corresponding credit limit. It can be calculated for one account or across multiple included revolving accounts.
Why it matters
The ratio helps describe how much of a revolving line is represented by reported balances. It does not by itself predict a credit score, approval, interest rate, or lender decision.
Example
A reported balance of $2,500 divided by a $10,000 limit equals 0.25. Multiplying by 100 produces 25% utilization.
What to check on your statement
Use the term as a starting point, then locate the matching label, balance category, date, fee, or rate on the current statement and cardmember agreement.
Common confusion
- Overall utilization can hide a much higher ratio on one individual card.
- The balance reported to a credit bureau may not match today's app balance.
